Blog 6 - Employee Productivity
Employee Productivity
What is employee productivity
Employee productivity can be defined as the amount of work (or output) produced by an employee in a specific period of time.
The importance of employee productivity
Employees are considered assets of a company as much as a company's product or service portfolio, and they can make or break a company. As such, a company should invest in its employees but also expect to get a return on that investment through their employees' productivity.

How to measure employee productivity?
It might be difficult to maintain workplace
efficiency. According to a Gallup poll from 2013, 70% of American workers are
disengaged from their jobs. Most employees find it difficult to focus
consistently and do the best job they can because they are distracted by
smartphones, social media, personal communications, and the demands of their
personal lives.
Low or average production is frequently the
result of a lack of enthusiasm and involvement. One straightforward approach to
acquire insight into how talented, engaged, and productive your employees are
is to accurately measure their productivity.
It
is important to measure the current employee productivity of an organisation
before working on improving it. There are different ways to measure employee
productivity of an organisation but the following are the most basic elements
that can be used to measure it
1. Speed and
Efficiency
The speed with which a person
completes tasks is a key indicator of their productivity. It demonstrates their
capacity to effectively manage time. A balance should be struck between the
quality of an employee's job and the time it takes them to complete it. An
employee's productivity will be great if he or she can produce high-quality
work in a short period of time.
2. Quality of
Work
The standard of work that an
employee produces is critical. This can also be compared to the employees'
coworkers. If the employee's work requires additional adjustments and coaching,
the employee will not be perceived as highly productive. Furthermore, the
quality of an employee's work should be judged in terms of how long it took
them to finish a task.
3.
Dependability & Consistency
Where an employee is dependable
as an employee is a significant indicator of their productivity. When an
employee is given a task, how likely are they to perform it correctly? It is
possible to factor in an employee's productivity if they are consistent with
their job and output.
4. Establish a
Baseline
Employees' productivity can be
measured more accurately if they have a predetermined baseline. This will help
you understand their output in relation to the baseline set and will help you
set the groundwork for their work. A salesperson, for example, might be asked
to close five deals in one day. If an employee manages to make ten sales in a
day, however, that individual is extremely productive.
5. Carry out a
Client Survey
Client satisfaction will suffer as a result
of low employee productivity. As a result, using client feedback to gauge an
employee's productivity is an excellent idea. This might assist you in
determining the employee's quality in relation to the client's happiness. As a
result, you'll get a precise estimate of the employee's productivity.
How to increase employee productivity?
1. Conduct an Employee Survey
Begin by conducting an audit of what
works and what doesn't for the staff. Find the bottlenecks and challenges that
are affecting the employee's productivity. Understanding what inspires them and
what prevents them from being more productive can aid you in determining which
strategies to emphasize.
2. Consider
Offering Flexible Working Hours
Because of their flexible work program, Best Buy saw a 35 percent improvement in employee productivity. Allowing employees to work from home for at least part of the day or allowing them to have flexible work hours has been found to increase productivity. You can start experimenting with a small group of employees and measure the results, depending on their job duties.
3. Technology
and Tool Updates
Hiring
the greatest people is only half of the battle when it comes to building a
healthier company. However, if those talented people don't have the necessary
tools, their output will suffer.
With the
continual advancement of technology year after year, keeping up with vital
tools has become critical. It is necessary in order for corporate processes to
continue to run smoothly.
4.
Increase Employee Engagement
Though the phrases "employee
engagement" and "employee productivity" may appear to be
dissimilar, they are in reality intertwined. It was discovered that if their
bosses were more sympathetic, 80 percent of employees would be more eager to
put in extra hours to get things done. Organizations with strong employee
engagement outperform those with low employee engagement by 202 percent,
according to the study.
5. Make the
Environment Suitable For Working
The
working environment has a significant impact on a person's productivity. HR's
role and responsibility is to create positive work environments in the
workplace. Employee productivity is influenced by noise levels and even
illumination in the workplace. Ascertain that the workplace is clean and
pleasant to work in.
6. Encourage
Healthy Life Choices
Employees
who are in good health are more productive. Encourage your staff to engage in
physical activity on a daily basis. Employees can be motivated to be physically
healthy by forming sports teams and motivating them to compete internally. You
can also incorporate office gyms and encourage employees to use them during
their breaks or in the morning.
7. Reward
Employees Based on Their Performance
Rewarding
employees drives not just the person who receives the prize, but also other
employees to attain the same goal. Employees should be given fair and just
awards based on their work rather than their seniority level. This will also
drive employees to work hard because they will benefit from it. A monetary or
non-monetary award can be given.
8. Employee Communication
Communication is a two-way street that helps the employee and the organization create trust. Employee communication does not usually entail distributing a standardized newsletter to the entire company. It's much more crucial to have open lines of communication. Low employee motivation, performance appraisal, and engagement are all linked to poor internal communications. Open communication also saves time and allows staff to work more efficiently. As a result, improving communication between employees, supervisors, and senior members of the organization is critical to increasing productivity.
9.
Focus on Bottom Level Employees Too
Another typical oversight we see
HR departments make is focusing solely on management teams. Motivating and
enhancing the productivity of the management team is frequently a focus of
attention and effort. However, it is important to remember that the
enterprise's productivity is also determined by the bottom-line personnel.
(Azmi, 2022)
Conclusion
It is difficult to
increase staff productivity with just one or two strategies. Building better
settings, good interactions with employees, and understanding their issues are
all part of increasing an organization's employee productivity rate. Building
regulations that enable you to assess the work environment and boost employee
morale as a constant way of improvement is what really helps.
